For evening sangeets, Diwali parties and receptions, go denser: the all-over embroidered silk kurtas, or the festive kurtas that carry small sequin highlights through the threadwork.
If you want embroidery that doesn't shout, the Japanese embroidered kurtas and the embroidered linen kurtas keep it to the collar and placket. They work for office Diwali lunches as well as family functions.
Silk is the dressiest. Our embroidered silk kurtas have all-over embroidery, a mandarin collar and a regular fit, and their listings suggest pairing them with a churidar, pajama or trousers.
Linen is the one to wear when it's warm. The Linen Embroidered Kurtas are pure linen with all-over tonal Chikankari-style Lucknowi embroidery; the Embroidered Linen Kurtas have tonal embroidery along the collar and placket, a straight cut and side slits.
Cotton sits in between, and many of the Chikankari-style and heritage-embroidered kurtas here are cotton. Each product page lists the fabric under Details.
Most pieces in this collection are the kurta alone. On most kurta pages you'll see the option to add a white cotton pajama, an Aligarhi pajama or a cotton salwar from our pajama collection. Anything named Kurta Set comes with its matching straight-fit pajama.
Dry cleaning is what we recommend for most of these. If you wash one at home, hand wash it separately in cold water, don't wring or bleach it, and iron on the reverse side at low-to-medium heat so the threadwork isn't flattened. Silk pieces should be stored somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
