How to Wear a Nehru Jacket with a Kurta (Without Overthinking It)
How to wear a Nehru jacket with a kurta: length, colour, pattern and fabric, the right jacket for weddings and Diwali, and how to wear one over a shirt.
A Nehru jacket over a kurta is the most useful trick in Indian menswear. It turns a plain kurta into a wedding outfit and a casual kurta into something you can wear to a dinner, and it costs a lot less than a second outfit.
It's also easy to get wrong. The jacket is too long, the colours fight, or both pieces are patterned. So here are the rules I'd give a friend, roughly in order of how much they matter.
The short version: the kurta should show clearly below the jacket, the jacket should be darker or richer than the kurta, only one of the two should carry a pattern, the fabric should suit the occasion, and the jacket should be buttoned and fit close without pulling.
Nehru jacket, waistcoat, bundi, koti: what's the difference?
In practice, not much. On our site the collection is called Nehru Jacket and the labels say Waistcoat, but every piece in it is a classic Nehru-style waistcoat: sleeveless, with a structured mandarin collar and a buttoned front, cut to sit over a kurta or a shirt. You'll hear bundi, koti and Modi jacket used for much the same garment.
Where people do draw a line, a waistcoat in the Western sense has an open V-neck and lapels, and a Nehru jacket has a closed, stand-up collar. Everything we sell has the stand-up collar.
Rule 1: The kurta must show below the jacket
This matters more than anything else on this list. A Nehru jacket should finish around the hip, and your kurta should carry on well below it. If the jacket and the kurta end at nearly the same point, the whole thing looks like an accident.
With a long kurta this happens on its own. With a short kurta, check the lengths before you buy. Our short kurta sets have a shorter, contemporary cut, so a waistcoat over one should still finish noticeably above the kurta's hem.
Rule 2: Put the darker or richer colour on top
The easiest combination is a light kurta with a deeper jacket. Ivory kurta, maroon jacket. White kurta, navy jacket. Pale pink kurta, deep teal jacket. It frames your face and it looks deliberate.
You can reverse it, with a light jacket over a dark kurta, and that can look very sharp in the evening, but it's harder to get right. If you're unsure, go darker on top.
Some pairings from our own racks that work:
- White Japanese Embroidered Kurta with a navy Thread Linen Waistcoat. Clean, and right for a daytime function.
- Ivory Embroidered Neckline Kurta with the Royal Maroon and Gold Jamawar Waistcoat. The classic festive look.
- Black Japanese Embroidered Kurta with the Ivory Jacquard Waistcoat. The reverse combination, for an evening.
- A pastel pink or ice blue kurta with a navy or teal Linen Piping Waistcoat. For summer weddings.

Rule 3: One pattern at a time
A Jamawar waistcoat is busy by nature, with woven paisley, brocade motifs and metallic zari. Put it over a plain kurta and it looks rich. Put it over a printed kurta and you have two outfits arguing with each other.
The same goes in reverse. If you're wearing one of our printed party kurtas, with their temple-art or royal-procession prints, pick a plain linen waistcoat and let the kurta do the talking.
Tone-on-tone embroidery counts as plain for this purpose. A kurta with self-colour embroidery on the collar and placket, like our Japanese embroidered kurtas, sits happily under a patterned jacket.
Rule 4: Match the fabric to the occasion
- Daytime, summer and family functions: linen. Our Thread Linen, Linen Piping and 4 Pocket Linen waistcoats are breathable, with a tailored fit, a structured mandarin collar and delicate accent stitching. Wear them over a cotton or linen kurta.
- Festive evenings and Diwali: Jamawar or jacquard. They bring pattern and a little sheen without needing a silk kurta underneath.
- Weddings and receptions: embroidered silk waistcoats with sequin detailing, or the Dola silk waistcoats with their foil-printed heritage motifs, over a silk kurta or a kurta set.
- Winter: corduroy. Ours are fine-wale cotton corduroy with a 5-button front and welt pockets, and their listing calls them right for winter weddings. They add genuine warmth.

Rule 5: Button it, and get the fit right
A Nehru jacket is meant to be worn buttoned. Left open, it flaps about and loses its shape. It should sit close to your body without the buttons pulling into little creases across the chest. If you can see strain lines, go up a size.
Our waistcoats start at size 36, but not every style runs to the same top size. Right now the thread linen and 4 pocket linen waistcoats go up to 44, the Jamawar ones to 46 and the corduroy ones to 48, and the Dola silk ones run from 38 to 44. Each product page lists exactly what's available. If you're between sizes, WhatsApp us on +91 95994 44945 with your kurta size and we'll suggest one.
Rule 6: Think about what's below the jacket
The pajama finishes the outfit. With a waistcoat on, I like a clean line, and our Classic White Cotton Pajama, straight-fit with a drawstring waist, goes under anything. The White Cotton Aligarhi Pajama, loose at the thigh and tapered at the ankle, looks more traditional for festive evenings.
If you'd rather not think about it at all, wear the jacket over a kurta set. A Silk Kurta with Bottom under a jacquard waistcoat is a complete wedding outfit.

Can you wear a Nehru jacket with a shirt?
Yes, and it's one of the better ways to wear one. The listings for our linen waistcoats suggest exactly that, a traditional kurta set or a crisp button-down shirt, and the corduroy ones are described as layering over a kurta or a shirt.
Two things make it work. First, the collar. A regular shirt collar sits under a mandarin collar better than you'd expect, and a mandarin-collar shirt looks neater still. Second, pattern discipline again. Our printed linen shirts are busy, so pair them with a plain linen or corduroy waistcoat. A textured Bhagalpuri Ghiccha shirt can take a slightly richer jacket, because its texture reads as plain from a distance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Wearing it open. It loses its shape and looks unfinished. Button it.
- A jacket as long as the kurta, or longer. Check both lengths before you buy.
- Two patterns at once. A printed kurta under a Jamawar waistcoat is the classic example.
- A heavy jacket at a daytime summer function. Silk and brocade in the afternoon heat are uncomfortable to wear and to look at. That's what the linen waistcoats are for.
- Too tight across the chest. If the buttons pull, go up a size.
- An iron straight onto Jamawar. It flattens the woven motifs. Steam from the reverse side instead.
If you're only buying two or three
If you're building a small set of waistcoats, here's the order I'd buy them in.
- A navy or black linen waistcoat. It goes over almost every kurta you own, it works in the daytime, and it costs ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 at the moment.
- A Jamawar or jacquard waistcoat in a festive colour, maroon and gold or a deep jacquard, for Diwali, weddings and every evening function.
- A corduroy waistcoat, ₹2,000 right now, if your winters are cold enough to need one.
With those three and a few kurtas, you have more outfits than most people need for an entire wedding season.

Looking after a waistcoat
Most of our waistcoats are dry clean only, and it's worth taking that seriously. They're structured garments, and a home wash can undo the shape.
For Jamawar, the care label adds one more instruction: never iron directly over the woven motifs, steam from the reverse side instead. Corduroy should be dry cleaned for its first two or three washes and hung on a broad wooden hanger in a breathable garment bag, not plastic. The Dola silk waistcoats have a foil print, so handle them gently and keep the iron on low.
A quick checklist before you order
- Will the jacket finish well above the hem of the kurta you'll wear it with?
- Is it darker or richer than the kurta?
- Is only one of the two patterned?
- Is the fabric right for the season and the time of day: linen for daytime and summer, Jamawar, jacquard or silk for evenings, corduroy for winter?
- Have you checked your size against the sizes listed on the product page?
- Is it marked down by more than 40%? Then it can't be exchanged, so be sure of the size.
Before you order
Two practical notes. Our exchange window is 7 days from delivery, for unworn and unwashed pieces with their tags on, and you pay the courier charges both ways. Anything marked down by more than 40% can't be exchanged, and several Jamawar waistcoats are in that bracket at the moment, so be sure of your size first.
And if you're in Delhi, it's far easier to choose a jacket colour against a kurta in person than on a screen. Our store is in Abul Fazal Enclave, Okhla, near Thokar No. 3, and it's open every day from 11:30 AM to 10 PM. Bring the kurta you're planning to wear with it.
